AN APRIL CONFERENCE IN THE USA, ON RESEARCH INTO ACTION FOR LIVABLE CITIES...

NEWPORT, RI - The Lennard Institute for Livable Cities, hosts of the International Making Cities Livable (IMCL) conference series begun in 1985, has returned to its former cycle of two conferences annually. The IMCL has just announced two venues for 2024: Newport, RI USA in April, and Cortona, Italy in October.

The 60th International Making Cities Livable conference will be held in the historic home of the Newport Jazz Festival, a beautiful walkable town offering many lessons for making livable cities. Tours will be included in the town as well as in nearby new walkable mixed-use developments. Late April is a delightful time in the city, with reasonable rates for travel and accommodations, including nearby hotels within walking distance.

The conference, titled "Making Cities Livable: Research Into Communication and ACTION," will feature leading scholars from leading US universities, as well as prominent professionals, city leaders, NGO heads, and other thought leaders. Topics will include climate resilience and adaptation, urban climate mitigation, housing diversity, equity and affordability, the critical role of public space, emerging research on the built environment, health and well-being, and much more.

Scholars interested in submitting abstracts will be able to submit when the online portal is opened later this week (December 4-8, 2023). Registration will also be opened starting with an Early Bird rate as well as discounted student and NGO rates.

Abstracts for the Newport conference will be due January 31, 2024, and notifications are expected by February 15th. Presenters will have until March 1 to register, and until April 1 to submit papers for the conference e-reader. Newport is between the major hubs of New York and Boston, with good access by train, bus or car.

... AND AN OCTOBER CONFERENCE IN ITALY, ON LEARNING FROM NATURE, CULTURE AND HISTORY

CORTONA, IT - This city, famous as an ancient Etruscan hill town and more recently the setting of Frances Mayes' Under the Tuscan Sun, offers a wealth of lessons for urban placemaking, food, rural economies, agriculture, managing tourism, and much more. The 61st International Making Cities Livable will be held in this town October 1-5, in partnership with the City government. The conference will include walking tours of the beautiful town, full of lessons for placemaking, public space and urban design.

The conference, titled "The Ecology of Place: Learning from Nature, Culture, and History," will examine broader topics of urban ecology, in both the natural and human sense, as well as health and well-being, food and food security, urban resilience, climate adaptation and mitigation, city and regional morphology through history and into the future, and much more.

Scholars interested in submitting abstracts will be able to submit for this conference (as well as the Newport conference) when the online portal is opened later this week (December 4-8, 2023). Registration will also be opened starting with an Early Bird rate as well as discounted student and NGO rates.
